Generated Content Standard

Summary

This standard defines validation, provenance, review, and publication controls for generated and AI-assisted documentation.

Audience

  • Documentation owners
  • Developers
  • Documentation tooling maintainers

Reference Content

Generated technical content may be updated automatically by pipelines, but automated systems and AI must never directly publish customer-facing documentation without validation and review.

Source classification

  • Use source_type: authored when people maintain the page content directly.
  • Use source_type: generated when an authoritative machine-readable source produces the page.
  • Use source_type: hybrid when generated reference material and authored guidance share a page.

Identify the authoritative source, generator ownership, update trigger, and safe manual-edit boundaries. Generated regions must not be edited by hand unless the workflow explicitly supports reconciliation.

Pipeline requirements

A generation pipeline must produce deterministic output, validate schema and links, detect unexpected deletions, preserve visibility controls, and require review before customer-facing publication. Fail closed when the source, generator, or validation result is uncertain.

AI-assisted content

AI output is an untrusted draft. A qualified human must:

  • Verify every factual statement against approved source material.
  • Remove unsupported assumptions and fabricated references.
  • Check audience, visibility, security, privacy, and legal constraints.
  • Validate links, code, diagrams, metadata, and terminology.
  • Complete the standard review and approval workflow.

AI must not receive secrets, confidential content, personal data, or restricted source material unless an explicitly approved system and policy permit it. Record AI assistance when organizational policy requires disclosure or provenance.
